The Institute Lives On
The last records and cases files for the Institute were dated 1986, and the Institute closed soon thereafter. However, the International Institute’s aid with teaching immigrants English lives on in the English Language Institute (ELI) at Youngstown State University. The ELI exists within the Center for International Studies program and provides English classes to anyone in need. Classes are conducted in small numbers and short programs to allow for personal contact with teachers. Broken down into grammar, reading and writing, listening and speaking, and test preparation, these classes help anyone developing their English skills prepare for future education.
The International Institute understood the needs of immigrants and how to help them. Many immigrants came to America to escape war torn countries, poverty, and religious persecution. Faced with dire situations, people came to the U.S. because our culture boasted acceptance and opportunity. Understanding the challenges of language and cultural contrast, the Institute addressed each person’s individual needs. From aiding families with legal status to creating leadership and development skills, the International Institute played a major role in developing the community of the Mahoning Valley, making it the culturally rich and diverse area it is today.
