Matteo Colangelo’s Immigration Documents
Matteo Colangelo was the father of Carmela Colangelo Baldelli, whose letters are included in our collection. He married Anna Maria Lariccia, a sister of Giuseppe, who was married to Lucia.
Matteo traveled to the US on the steamship Duca Degli Abruzzi in November, 1911, traveling from Naples to New York. His ticket cost approximately $42.
In 1917, he began the process of applying for citizenship. After filing this “Declaration of Intent,” he would have had to file a petition to become a citizen three years later. If that petition was granted, he would have become a citizen in the early 1920s.
